The day finally arrived! Cameron has been counting down to his 5 year old birthday party for about 6 months. He decided that he wanted a Star Wars birthday party. We focused on the "not-so-scary" Jedi stuff. We invited 9 kids and all came except for 1 sick one (sorry Joseph). I really expected this to be a totally wild and crazy party, but the kids were exceptionally well behaved and except for a few tears over some small things, it went off without a hitch.
When the kids first arrived they colored a "Jedi" picture and we hung them up for decoration. Then we ate pizza and breadsticks (insert ode to Little Caesars right here). Then we played Star Wars bingo. The bingo cards had only 9 squares (a good idea for kids this age. Makes for fast games and lots of winners). The squares had pictures of star wars lego minifigs. It was super cute (in my opinion). I cracked up when I looked over at little Colton Willyerd and he had a chocolate mouth from eating all his m&m's instead of putting them on the card. What a crack up! So the bingo was a big hit.
Then is was time for some "Jedi Training"! We headed upstairs to our obstacle course in the loft. The kids practiced going through the obstacle course with a lightsaber (otherwise known as a 2 foot pool noodle) in hand. The kids seemed to have a great time. Then it was time for target practice as each kid used their pool noodle to keep hitting a balloon in the air for as long as possible. Then we did it with partners and played pass by hitting balloons with the lightsabers. We lived things up then by having some kids go downstairs while others threw balloons over the rail for the ones downstairs to hit.
Our final activity was saving the princess and queen. Last night Bob and I and the boys blew up about 80 balloons. We hid pictures of Princess Leia and Queen Amidala in some of them. The kids needed to rescue them by popping all the balloons. It was HILARIOUS! Cameron got smart at some point and ran to get a fork! LOL!
After the balloon popping session we had an awesome cake made by Suzie. She made a 3-D, R-2 D-2 cake that stood about a foot tall! It was incredible! That woman has some talent! The kids loved it and it was almost a crime to cut the cute thing up and eat it! After cake and ice cream Cameron opened his presents. He was so excited about each one and he's been playing with them all day and into the night!
